2nd Quarter Newsletter

After a blockbuster start to 2018, equity markets have been caught in a vicious circle of trading over the quarter’s last two months, with volatility and uncertainty taking center stage. While a combination of factors like solid earnings, upbeat economic data and new tax legislation have fueled some rallies, inflation fears, protectionist and anti-trade Trump policies, Washington turmoil and faster-than-expected interest rate hikes continue to weigh on equity market returns. Click Here to Read More

First Quarter Tax Report

Tax season has arrived—again. The Internal Revenue Service reported on January 23rd that it successfully started accepting and processing 2016 federal individual income tax returns on schedule. According to the IRS.gov website, more than 153 million returns are expected to be filed this year. Taxpayers have until Tuesday, April 18, 2017 to file their 2016 returns and pay any taxes due. The deadline is later this year due to several factors. The usual April 15 deadline falls on Saturday this year, which would normally give taxpayers until at least the following Monday. However, Emancipation Day, a D.C. holiday, is observed on Monday, April 17, giving taxpayers nationwide an additional day to file. By law, D.C. holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way federal holidays do. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Monday, Oct. 16, 2017 to file.

1st Quarter Newsletter

While the weather in the United States ended 2017 on a cold note for many residents, equity investors finished a very warm year.  2017 was a great year for investors as strong returns pushed domestic equities to fresh all-time highs. Robust equity performance was also seen across many of the major global indices. The positive performance of equity markets in 2017 added to what is already one of the longest bull markets on record.

As for 2017, there are several tax reduction strategies that may apply to your particular situation. In this report, we will discuss several of these opportunities. Please note that this report is not a substitute for using a tax professional. In addition, many states do not follow the same rules and computations as the federal income tax rules. Interest Rates

It has been a difficult decade for savers and investors who look to interest rates to help their investment return. For 10 years they have suffered falling or ultra-low interest rates, leaving them with little to modest returns on their deposit accounts. One of the main arguments against the Federal Reserve’s low interest-rate strategy in the wake of the Great Recession was the cost borne by savers. Even now as the central bank slowly reverses that policy — with two rate hikes already in 2017 —savers still aren’t benefiting much.

Custodial and Backdoor Roth IRAs

Many people think they can hold off saving for retirement at younger ages and make up the difference later. Savvy investors know this can be a costly mistake. Waiting too long to start saving can make it very difficult to catch up, and only a few years can make a big difference in how much you'll accumulate.  For some, having a large retirement account might seem like a nice but unattainable goal. It can become more realistic if you know the secret: time.  When should you start saving for retirement?  It might seem backwards to worry about the last money you'll need early in life, but because compounding over time can be so powerful, starting early gives you more flexibility later on in life.  If you have children (or grandchildren) who earn money, now might be a good time to help them start or fund a retirement account. While they can always fund a traditional IRA, if they qualify, a Roth IRA might be an even better choice.

2nd Quarter Economic Update

The global economy is dangerously close to stall speed. There is no denying the loss of growth momentum in the course of 2015 and going into this year. Estimates for 1st quarter U.S. growth are modest, and we expect the rest of the world continues to have difficulty growing this year. In an economy that’s cruising close to stall speed, the risk of a plane crash is inevitably higher than otherwise.

Apple Event

The Zephyr Team would like to thank everyone that attended our Tech Event at the Apple Store in the Thousand Oaks Mall on March 12th.  We appreciate them taking the time to attend.

The Apple Geniuses really know their products and were quick to answer questions that were thrown at them during their presentations.  It was very nice of them to open the store to us and the staff seemed genuinely happy to share their knowledge with everyone.

It was a lot to take in, in a short amount of time, but the Apple Geniuses helped each participant learn something useful about their Apple product.  If there wasn’t enough time to get the information that you needed, or you were unable to attend, you can contact Apple Support at (800) 275-2273, with any technical questions you may have.

Zephyr will be having more events throughout 2016, so please watch for upcoming invitations.  It really is a joy for us to gather with our clients outside of the office, and to do something fun or out of the ordinary.  We hope to see you at our next event!

How to Reduce Your 2015 Income Taxes

Tax season has arrived—again. That means that it’s now time to finish and file your tax returns for 2015. This year you have until April 18 to file your federal tax return. (That is not a typo. April 15 is generally Tax Day, but the deadline was pushed back this year in recognition of Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in Washington D.C. to commemorate the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act).  Because Emancipation Day falls on a Saturday this year, it will be observed on Friday, thus pushing the tax-filing deadline to Monday for most of the nation, the IRS says....Click here to read more

1st Quarter Newsletter

When the final day of trading closed on New Year’s Eve, the U.S. stock market finished a disappointing year for investors.  Despite all the optimism that 2015 began with, there was limited,if any,joy by year end. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2.2% for the year, the Standard and Poor’s 500 index was down 0.7%, and the broad based Value Line Index was down 11.2%. The NASDAQ was one of the only bright spots, gaining nearly 6% for 2015 despite the small-cap Russell 2000 index falling 5.7% and down 12.3% from its peak...

Welcome to 2016

We hope that you and your family had an enjoyable holiday season.  As we begin 2016, no one can predict with certainty what new changes or challenges may occur. Nothing that happens in the market on the first few days of trading in a new year surprises us anymore. Over the years, we have found that sometimes market action in the first few days of the New Year reflects a lot of pent-up repositioning by portfolio managers. This repositioning can result in significant volatility during the first week of January, and the market can act very different in the first week of January than it did in the last week of December. As we move towards the middle of January this repositioning should be behind us and we can start to get an idea as to how 2016 is shaping up...

Economy: Still Slow Going

As we head into the second half of 2015, investors face continued volatility. There is uncertainty surrounding U.S. interest rates, the direction of stock markets and a sluggish global economy.

In just about every corner of the world, economic growth remains sluggish. The U.S. economy slowed to a halt in the first quarter with growth decreasing 0.2%. However, there were signs throughout the 2nd quarter that the economy was bouncing back as the weather improved. The jobs market looked better, with May's employment report particularly strong. Housing also seemed to find its footing. Manufacturing continues to be a weak spot, and lower oil prices are still a headwind to growth. Overall, though, the economy looks on track to grow about 2% for the year.      Click here to read the full article

Quarterly Economic Update

Volatility returned in a big way in the first quarter of 2015 as the market focused on everything from central-bank actions to Greek elections, a strong dollar, and a steady beat of merger activity. Federal Reserve (Fed) watching was a full-time job. With the U.S. economy initially showing signs of improvement, the central bank started to send signals that it was ready to raise short-term interest rates and create a more normal monetary policy environment after the extraordinary measures put in place during the financial crisis...(click continue reading button below to see full article)

Economy: How are we doing?

The gap between a stronger U.S. economy and the weaker economies of other developed nations seemed to widen in the fourth quarter. In the U.S., job growth looked good as there were signs that lower gas prices were starting to spur consumer spending. In contrast, Europe's economy remained quite sluggish throughout the quarter, as fears of too low inflation and slow growth remained quite pronounced. Japan also struggled to find its footing, sliding back into a recession after a sales tax hike put a dent in consumer spending. Emerging markets, particularly China, also showed signs that growth was slowing down in the quarter.
